Sydney (Kingsford Smith) International Airport, or Sydney Airport (IATA: SYD, ICAO: YSSY), is located in the Sydney suburb of Mascot. It is the major airport serving Sydney, and is a major hub for Qantas. It is the world's oldest continually operated commercial airport, and the busiest commercial airport in Australia, handling in excess of 26 million passengers per year, which is expected to rise to over 68 million by 2020.
Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport , commonly referred to as "Mascot" after the suburb where it's located, is barely 8km south of the city (flight arrivals and departures tel 13 1223). Domestic and international terminals are on opposite sides of the airport, linked by the free Long-Term Car Park Shuttle Bus (every 30min), or you can take the Airport Express bus for $2.50. Travellers can also now take a train right into the city centre: the new $365-million Airport Link underground railway, which opened in May 2000, connects the airport to the City Circle train line in just over ten minutes (every 15min; one-way $9, return $12). However, the train has not been as popular as expected: as a suburban commuter service it can be crowded at peak hours, there is no dedicated space for luggage and it is more expensive than Airport Express buses, which will drop you off near your hotel. A taxi ride from the airport to the city centre or Kings Cross costs $25-30, depending on traffic.
Bureau de change offices at both terminals are open daily from 5am until last arrival, with rates comparable to major banks. A large, efficient tourist information centre , the Sydney Visitor Centre , is open the same hours and is situated on the ground-floor of the international terminal. It offers stand-by hotel accommodation deals and sells tourist passes which can be used on the Airport Express bus. A range of hostels advertise on an adjacent notice board with free phones for direct reservations. Nearby is a bank of car hire stands.
