Richmond, 3 km. east of Melbourne, has been a residential, industrial and residential, and latterly a more residential, suburb. Its western boundary, Punt Road, adjoins Melbourne city and its eastern boundary is the Yarra River, across from leafy Hawthorn. The river curves around to form Richmond's southern boundary, opposite South Yarra and Toorak. The northern boundary, Victoria Parade, adjoins Collingwood. Richmond was named after Richmond Hill, London. Like its London counterpart it has Kew close by.
Richmond has a prominent hill on its western boundary, known as Richmond Hill but also as Dockers Hill. It is surmounted by four church spires. The land falls away to the river in the east, to the Collingwood flat in the north and to the flat land of Burnley n the south. Richmond was subdivided into allotments of about twelve hectares by the government surveyor, Robert Hoddle, in 1839. Most were purchased speculatively. Richmond Hill was occupied by Farquhar McCrae (surgeon, suburban speculator) and Joseph Docker. McCrae subdivided his land into smaller allotments in a couple of years, but Docker's land, from Punt Road to Church Street, backing up to Richmond Terrace, was not all sold until the 1860s. He donated the land on which St. Stephens Anglican church was built. Bridge Street is renowned for its designer-label clothing factory outlets, although it and parallel Swan Street have a growing reputation for eateries - everything from simple cafes to sophisticated restaurants. If you go for ethnic food, Swan Street is the place for Greek food, while Victoria Street has numerous Vietnamese restaurants. Richmond is also famous for Dimmeys discount department store, distinctively adorned with a dome and clock-tower. The store has been operating from the same Swan Street location since 1853. Adjoining Richmond is the MCG, one of the most famous cricket grounds in the world. Take the opportunity to attend a cricket or football match, or on non-event days, you can take a tour of the hallowed ground. In neighbouring South Yarra, Como House is a restored mansion with five acres of gardens overlooking the Yarra River. The house dates from 1847 and is a fusion of Australian Regency and Italianate architecture styles. The historic garden features sloping lawns, woodland walks, a croquet lawn, flower displays, water garden and fountains.
