St Kilda is Victoria's busiest beach.
St Kilda is a remarkable place. It is situated on one of the most picturesque points of the Bay a short distance from the city, has safe sandy beaches, and yet for decades was shunned by Melbournites because it was the haunt of prostitutes and druggies. It wasn't always like that. Back in the first half of the century, St Kilda was one of the most fashionable suburbs of Melbourne with grand homes and grand people. Today, it is enjoying a resurgence. The prostitutes and druggies have largely been pushed out by rapidly rising real estate prices and St KIlda is fast returning to its heydays. This bayside suburb is now one of the main tourist destinations and is renowned for its picturesque bayside setting, close proximity to the city, beaches, music venues, restaurants and cafe lifestyle.
It is possible to surf at St Kilda Beach in perfect conditions: south to south-westerly winds blowing over 25 knots for at least four hours. This happens on average only four to six times a year.
With its markets, funfairs and nightclubs, St. Kilda's actual beach is often overlooked. Just 20 minutes from the city by tram, it runs between the St. Kilda marina and the Royal Melbourne Yacht Club and is backed by parks and bike paths. It is a popular spot for a stroll, rollerblade or a sun-bake on a warm weekend, or to people watch, but swimming is somewhat less popular (not surprising so close to the city!) However, there is plenty more to keep you occupied. The historic St. Kilda pier is a favorite spot for a romantic evening stroll and the adjacent breakwater contains a small but growing colony of fairy penguins. And of course, the lively street life of Acland and Fitzroy Streets is just around the corner. The sand is raked daily by especially imported cleaning machines, and dogs are banned from the beach from Nov 1 to Apr 30, except for a small section north of the yacht club, where they are permitted year round.
St Kilda Life Saving Club was founded 94 years ago and since then no one has drowned at the beach between the flags. During the mid-19th century, women wore heavy swimming costumes made out of serge while men swam nude.
